The conceptual basis of my art practice relates to improvisation. Starting each painting in the absence of an idea, every color chosen and brushstroke applied immediately prompts another in response, ultimately taking each painting in its own direction until a new picture emerges. Under this approach, the act of painting is not the visualization of an artist’s thoughts but rather a mode of cognition in itself. The painting process thereby generates the idea.

My chosen support—anodized aluminum—infuses each painting with a permeating light, which parallels an experience of nature without directly depicting it. My work thus continues the tradition of Symbolism, summarized by French poet Stéphane Mallarmé: “Paint not the thing, but the effect it produces.” Pleasing color harmonies nested within dynamic gestures likewise draw an equivalence to a flicker of sunshine or a light breeze on a summer’s day: small, blissful moments, quietly advocating for the joy of being present. Each one of my paintings offers a moment of this kind.
